SYDNEY, Australia - There was a lot of indecision on Asian markets Tuesday, leading to a mixed close.
The Australian All Ordinaries fell 19.90 points or 0.29% to 6,857.10 as major bushfires caused havoc across two states.
Japan's Nikkei 225 conversley made a 188.17 point s or 0.81% gain to 23,520.01.
China's Shanghai Composite was little changed, adding 4.85 points or 0.17% to 2,914.82.
On foreign exchange markets the U.S. dollar made a limp recovery, rising to 1.1035 to the euro. It advanced only a few points against the British pound, to last trade at 1.2857.
The Japanese yen drifted to 109.27, while the Swiss franc edged a touch higher to 0.9947.
The Canadian dollar remained on the back foot at 1.3233. The Australian dollar inched down to 0.6857. The New Zealand dollar fell to 0.6338.
Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones at the close was trading 10.25 points or 0.04% higher at 27,691.49.
The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 6.07 points or 0.20% to 3,082.01.
The Nasdaq Composite lost 11.04 points or 0.13% to 8,464.28.
